We had what was called an icebox. It had a place to put the ice for use. Had to keep it wrapped. And mother had a big cart with upturned edges on the rims of two shelves. She would put creek water in the trays where we had some of our food and dipped towels in the water and covered the food to keep it good. You had to keep refilling the trays. In later years we got to move in town and finally had electricity and an indoor bathroom. I thought it was a castle. LOL In later years when we moved to a town in Okla. we also had a small ice house. This was where we bought ice when we needed extra and for making ice cream. We would put it in a washtub and wrap it in a quilt. Was a simpler life back then tho and much good about it. Life it so busy now and too little time with just family time, then in some homes that is interrupted with cell phone, e-readers, electronics games, texting, etc. Some people even text each other in their own house. It's crazy. Glad we didn't have all of this when I was raising my children. BUT, I do love my computer. :) Maxie mac262(at)me(dot)commaudemaxine@gmail.co,https://www.blogger.com/profile/11612461543816484090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4271375082145370896.post-67449940641399973532014-02-05T00:40:53.160-05:002014-02-05T00:40:53.160-05:00Hi Pam! I love to read historical fiction but many times I have wondered about the old ways of making ice or just how people kept cool long ago - especially the women in their many layers of dress. Of course, since I'm already heat sensitive due to my having MS, and I live in Oklahoma where our winters seem to only last a month or two-until this winter, that is-then I've been getting full blown hot flashes for the last 3 yrs that sometimes literally last for hours upon hours and I'm placing refreezable gel ice packs strategically around my person I definitely do not take my trusty GE freezer for granted and I praise God that he placed me in the perfect era because He totally knew I was going to need central air conditioning in my home and car!! kam110476https://www.blogger.com/profile/01693696612437738986noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4271375082145370896.post-80423148184764075392014-02-04T17:49:51.071-05:002014-02-04T17:49:51.071-05:00I enjoyed your posted movie of ice harvesting. We a...I enjoyed your posted movie of ice harvesting. We are so accustomed to refrigeration, we forget what came before it!
