Let's visit Berlin, Ohio today!

BERLIN, OHIO - OLDEST AMISH COMMUNITY IN HOLMES COUNTY, OHIO

by Molly Jebber, Amish Historical Romance Author and Speaker

This is another favorite place of mine to visit for a weekend. They have Amish farm tours, auctions, and you'll see buggies and wagons driven by the Mennonites and Amish.

In 1820 is when the Amish first came to live in Berlin, Ohio. My stories took place during 1899-1902.  I bought a quilt at an Amish auction (which first started in the early 1900's and is these auctions are still being held a couple times a year). The tattered and worn quilt is beautiful with its soft yellow, pink, white, and blue prints. It had flour-sack backing, and it is over 100 years old.

Berlin, Ohio was founded July 2, 1816 by John Swigert. He was from Berlin, Germany, and Joseph Troyer, an early settler from Berlin, Pennsylvania named Berlin, Ohio after their hometowns. In the early 1900's, Berlin was a busy town with a foundry, and hat, blacksmith, and dry goods shops. They now have hotels, restaurants, and a variety of shops. You'll enjoy watching them make fudge in the candy store window, eating their delicious homemade noodles, pies, and other foods. And enjoy their tours! And you are within fifteen minutes of Mt. Hope and Sugarcreek Amish communities. Thank you for visiting me here today. Have you been to Berlin, Ohio or an Amish community?

  3. We made a quick trip to Berlin, OH a couple days ago. We usually go 2 - 3 times a year. It's only about 2 1/2 hours from home and is a nice little get-a-way for us.
