HHH BLOGGER SPOTLIGHT—MARY DAVIS & FOUR CHANCES TO WIN A BOOK!

HHH Blogger Spotlight banner.png

Howdy Everyone!

I’m Mary Davis, and I’m today’s spotlight blogger.

I was born and raised in Washington State. I have moved from one side of the country to the other and am glad to be back. When people would ask what’s my hometown, I claim Washington State—the whole state. Growing up, we moved back and forth across the state, so no one town is “home.” I’ve lived in the arid central to east side of the state, west of the Cascade Mountains on the rainy side, and even over on the Olympic Peninsula. There is just about ever kind of climate you could want from arid to semi rain forest in one state. It’s great!

I’m the youngest of four children and am pleased to say that we all get along well. I’m blessed to have the siblings that I do. I have been married for thirty-six years and have three adult children. My oldest and his wife are expecting their third child, my third grandchild. Yay! My second oldest resides in heaven with Jesus, and my baby is also married and planning to move up to the Pacific Northwest next year. I can’t wait to have her close.

I have loved story since I can remember and have had characters running around in my head for almost as long. One of my favorite classes from elementary school on up was creative writing. But there’s a catch. I have a learning disability, dyslexia, which makes both reading and writing difficult—well more like reading and spelling. I still can’t spell my way out of a wet paper bag to save my life and earned very low grades in English classes.

So why am I in a profession that relies on these skills? God. When I am weak, He is strong. I can claim none of the glory in my writing. By all accounts, being an author is one of the last things I should be doing. But it is what the Lord has called me to, so I do it and love creating stories. The characters inside my head pester me until I write their story.

The first “novel” I ever started writing was waaaaaaay back in fourth grade. My best friend and I thought we could write a novel. I think we got all of two sentences written on bright yellow notebook paper. As an adult, I wrote a few children’s stories that never got published and shifted to chapter books as I preferred to write longer stories. The first of those (A Step Out of Time, a YA fantasy) is still only half written. The second one (Nobody’s Daughter, a contemporary YA), I did finish but not published. Then I wrote an adult Christian futuristic adventure suspensy thing called Free Zone. Then I wrote a historical prairie romance called Cinda’s Surprise. Can you tell I was all over the genre map? I continued with adult Christian romance and started several for proposals.

My first published novel, which was the fifth novel I completed, was a contemporary romantic comedy, Newlywed Games. My second book published, a historical prairie romance, was the third novel I wrote, Cinda’s Surprise. From there I wrote several short novels, both historical and contemporary romances and a few novellas. Though I have tried to focus on writing historical romances, I have written a few contemporaries along the way.

The current historical series I’m writing is The Quilting Circle set in a town based on the town I went to college in. I named the town after the residence hall I lived in.

Book one, The Widow’s Plight, introduces you to the town of Kamola, Aunt Henny, and the quilting circle ladies. In it a single mother steps out of the shadows of abuse and into the sunshine. But will a secret clouding her past cost her the man she loves?

In book two, The Daughter’s Predicament, as Isabelle’s romance prospects are turning in her favor, a family scandal derails her dreams.

In book three, The Damsel’s Intent, a hermit comes down from the mountains to snag a husband.

Each of the books are available in paperback and ebook (Free on Kindle Unlimited). Books one and two are also available in audio, and book three will be in audio soon.

I am in the process of finishing up writing book four in the series, The Débutante’s Secret, which will release August 2021. When a fancy French lady steps off the train and into Deputy Montana’s arms, his simple life might not be enough anymore.

Future projects I will be working on or hope to work on are book five in my Quilting Circle series with a working title of The Lady’s Mission. I am also currently working on a proposal for a WWII female pilot story and hoping it gets contracted. It is tentatively titled Mrs. Witherspoon Goes to War.

Here are your FOUR CHANCES TO WIN A BOOK!

My first novella, “Love Notes” in Love Letters, is the story of Laurel who has just lost her father in a bank robbery of his own scheming. Ashamed of his behavior, the only solace she finds is in a mysterious sheet of music she discovers propped up on the piano in the church. To enter to win a physical paperback copy of Love Letters, tell me how many states have you lived in? Which was your favorite?

  1. Thanks for telling us about yourself! My family went to the Lancaster, PA area twice and loved it, exploring tourist traps and enjoying the amazing food of the area. That's my adventure.

    1. Sounds like a great time! I haven't had a chance to go there. Maybe some day. As a kid, I went backpacking in the Cascade Mountains with my dad. That was fun!

    1. Hi Betsy,
      1. I prefer 1840-ish through 1929. I have developed ideas out side of that, but that is my comfort zone. I really like 1880s through the roaring twenties.
      2. I agree.
      3. Turning leaves are so beautiful.
      4. I don't think I have ever even driving through PA.

    1. Hi Betty!
      1. Both. Sometimes I will take an aspect from someone I know, but more often I make them up. By mostly making them up, I don't feel as though I"ll hurt anyone's feelings if I have my character do and say things the real person wouldn't.
      2. I can't say that I'm brave enough to try that.
      3. Wow! That must have been quite a view.
      4. I love living in Washington State as well.
      Thanks for stopping by!
