I remember when the National Cash Register Company was located in Dayton, Ohio for many years and their beautiful building stretched far and wide with all the flags of countries they did business with lined in front. 

In 1881, a group of investors acquired the Ritty Cash Register Company, and it's patents. The new owners changed the name to National Manufacturing Company.

In the early 1884, James Patterson, who was formerly in the coal and railroad business, became the highest investor and owner of the National Manufacturing Company, and he renamed it the National Cash Register Company where they now made mechanical cash registers. The first office had thirteen employees in the Callahan Power Building in Dayton, Ohio. 

In 1885, when the self-adding cash register was introduced at an exhibit in Chicago, Illinois. J.W. Allison, visiting from England, found out the machine could be adapted to English currency, he became the company's first international agent in Liverpool, England.

In the mid-1880's, James Patterson put together the first sales manual, where he invented guaranteed sales territories, quota and point systems, sales conventions, and dress codes. 

In 1893, James Patterson constructed a daylight factory with very big windows to allow for daylight and better ventilation for employees. He added baths, shower, exercise programs, and hot lunches for workers also.

In 1906, a friend of James Patterson, Charles Kettering, invented the first electric powered cash register. In 1911, Charles Kettering invented the Class 1000 electric register which stayed in production for forty years. He also created the O.K. Credit Authorization service for verifying customers' credit for retail stores. 

In NCR's twenty-seventh year of business, they sold their millionth cash register. They are still in business today, but a few years ago, moved their corporate office to New York. 

I hope you've enjoyed learning the history about the cash register. Another tidbit about Charles Kettering, is that he was a major contributor to Kettering Hospital for which I was once employed.

Stephen Girard was famous for being the first multi-millionaire at that time in history and for saving the United States from financial ruin during the war of 1812. He was born May 20, 1750. He was an American citizen, philanthropist, and banker of French origin. He didn't have any children, so he spent money on helping the education and welfare of orphans. He married Mary Lum in 1887, but she became mentally ill and hard to manage. She was committed to a mental institution, and he didn't marry again. His legacy and money still help orphans to date. 

Stephen was the son of a common sailor. He lost sight in his right eye at the age of eight. His education was scant.  

In 1760, he went to New York and worked as a cabin boy. He worked in the coastal trader system along the east coast and as far as the south of the Caribbean. In May of 1776, already a licensed captain, he sailed to Philadelphia were he opened and ran a grocery and liquor shop while he kept a hand in the coastal trading system. By 1790, he had a fleet of trading vessels and a net worth of six thousand dollars which was a lot back then. 

In 1791, his merchantmen were involved in salvaging goods from French planters during the Haitian revolution. He was left with ten thousand dollars of goods he was holding for the owners, when they were most likely killed during this revolution. When he couldn't find any of the owners left, he added the goods to his. 

Stephen also participated in the Old China Trade, financing voyages to Canton. He profited from legitimate goods as well as opium, which was smuggled into China. In 1824, this part of his business ended when there was an incident with one of his ships and China's authorities. 

In 1793, there was a breakout of Yellow Fever. Girard hired nurses and doctors to help, and also his home. He cared for patients himself.

In 1812, he opened a bank which many years later became Mellon Bank, and then Citizen's Federal Bank. December 26, 1831, Stephen died. He had been hit and ran over by a wagon and horse in the street years earlier, and he had never fully recovered.

The History of Buttons

Let's talk about the history of buttons!

We all have buttons on some of our clothes. I was surprised Old Order Amish do not use buttons, because they consider them a decoration, and they don't use them as to not draw attention to their clothes, especially since buttons were once considered a sign of prestige. We'll learn more about this below.

The oldest button was found in a region of the Indus Valley, now known as modern day Pakistan. It is estimated to be around 5000 years old, with a decorative flat face that fits into a loop, and is primarily made out of curved shell. These buttons were not used as a closure on clothing or sewn in a straight line. They were used as decorations.

Ancient Romans also made and used buttons. Their garments were loose-fitting and made of heavy material which required thicker buttons made of horn, wood, and bronze. The Middle Ages is when the button really began to take hold as a fastener. Buttons were used for more fitted clothing for men and women.

In the 1600's, button makers became more popular around the globe. During this time, buttons were only affordable to the more wealthy men and women. They were a symbol of prosperity and prestige.

In the 1890s freshwater pearl button manufacturing exploded—in response to the ever-growing demand of the ready-to-wear industry (and to protective tariffs that discouraged imports). In factories from Wisconsin to Iowa to Arkansas, workers used tubular saws to cut round blanks from mussel and clam shells, which were ground to standard thicknesses, then faced, drilled, and polished.

The Industrial Revolution made way for prices of buttons to become affordable and worn by the masses. By the 1920s buttons made of synthetic materials were increasingly common. Because these could be made in larger sizes and different colors, ready-to-wear fashions began to feature them. Charlie Chaplin was obsessed with buttons. The bigger the button on his clothes, the better.

In the twentieth century, plastic buttons even made them more available to everyone since they could really be produced cheap.
